The Microsoft Office suite has been around for some time now on mobile, and users who need this productivity tool anywhere are very happy with it. Today comes a dark mode. The eyes will say thank you.
Last year we learned that Microsoft was working in a dark mode for its Outlook app. Renderings of this work were leaked around the web last month and today dark mode fans will certainly be delighted to hear that the Redmond giant has just confirmed that dark mode is coming very soon for Office apps and Outlook, both on iOS and Android. This should be good for the eyes and, for some, the batteries of smartphones. This is exactly what it is about.
In a post on Medium, Microsoft Office Design Director Jon Friedman said: “ A collaboration with a design company led us to offer a dark mode for the entire M365 product suite and today it is. the start of the rollout of this dark mode for Outlook for iOS and Android, as well as for Office.com! The upcoming launch of iOS 13 will extend this deployment to Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner and To-Do on mobile.
That being said, it’s not just about going from a light theme to a dark theme. Jon Friedman also recalls that dark mode preserves battery life. This is particularly true if your smartphone is equipped with an AMOLED screen – Google is also putting this point forward -. And to add that future updates will offer users to set their preferences so that applications automatically switch from one mode to another.
However, you will have to wait before taking advantage of the dark mode. As Jon Friedman points out, the majority of Office applications will only receive this functionality with the deployment of iOS 13, which is expected to arrive within a month, at most. Still a little patience.
