With the Samsung Galaxy Watch5, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro, and the Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Samsung presented three new wearables at its Unpacked event. As with the new foldable smartphone, we already had the opportunity for a first hands-on.
Samsung Galaxy Watch S5 And Galaxy Watch5 Pro: Samsung’s New Smartwatches Can Do That
Samsung’s new generation of smartwatches has undergone an exciting change. There is no longer a Classic model but a “Pro” model. This is not only reflected in the name but also the design.
The rotating bezel that made the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 stand out from the crowd in previous years is gone on the new model. This is now controlled by the software, with a touch bezel.
The Pro model’s AMOLED display is significant at 1.36 inches and has a sharp 450 × 450 pixel resolution. The most expensive model in the series is only available in a 45-millimetre version. Compared to the cheaper model, the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro is made of titanium and feels very high quality in the hands-on.
Meanwhile, the standard model of the Watch5 can hardly be distinguished from its predecessor. We still have a flat Amoled panel – depending on the version with a size of 1.19 inches or 1.36 inches.
The resolution also varies between 396 × 396 pixels for the 40-millimetre version and 450 × 450 for the 44-millimetre version. The displays of all models are coated with “sapphire crystal” and, according to Samsung, should be around 60 percent more resistant to scratches and broken displays.
Samsung Galaxy Watch5 And Pro: Bigger Battery And Faster Charging
Inside is the Exynos W920 processor, which was already used in the Watch4. Samsung combines 1.5 gigabytes of RAM and 16 gigabytes of internal memory. The batteries, in turn, have received significant upgrades.
While the small Samsung Galaxy Watch5 now uses a 284 mAh instead of a 247 mAh memory cell, the large Galaxy Watch5 now has a 410 mAh battery (previously 361 mAh). The Pro version has been improved the most with a total of 590 mAh because the previous model also had 361 mAh.
In terms of everyday use, Samsung speaks of battery life of up to 50 hours for the smaller models. The Pro model is said to be able to last up to 80 hours without a charger. Charging continues using the Qi charging standard, which is now up to 30 percent faster than the previous generation.
The new smartwatch offers some new fitness features. A Samsung BioActive sensor on the back measures heart rate and other values. Also new is a temperature sensor with which users can determine their body temperature in the future. The watches are also 5ATM and IP68 protected against dust and water.
WearOS 3.5 with OneUI Watch 4.5 interface is pre-installed as software. This now has eight new watch faces and minor optimizations on board. Also new is improved sleep tracking, which offers coaching to improve sleep.
Several new sports functions are also exclusive to the Pro model, for example, a feature that allows you to navigate back to the starting point during a workout. In general, the marketing of the Pro watch is very much aimed at athletes.
The Galaxy Watch5 is available to pre-order now. The RRP for the 40-millimetre version is 299 euros. The 44-millimetre model starts at 329 euros. LTE optionally costs 50 euros extra. The Galaxy Watch5 Pro costs 469 euros. Here, too, you pay 50 euros more for LTE. The colours silver and graphite are available for both Watch5 sizes.
Sapphire is only available on the 44-millimetre model. Pink gold is only for the 40-millimetre version. The Pro model is only available in black and grey titanium.
